Music Blog Romania

Best of the ’06 first half

22.Jul

My Old Kentucky Blog made a top of the best songs released this year. While I must admit my “ignorance” in not listening to all those tracks, it is hard for me to understand why none of David Gilmour’s songs on Island never made it to that list.

Good thing that at least Regina Spektor is there.

Update: Thinking more about it I realize that neither Red Hot Chilli Peppers latest release – Stadium Arcadium – is not there. Nor is Tool, Johnny Cash and a lot others.

Top 100 Songwriters

19.Jun

After a short vacation to the beaches of our neighbouring country, I came back with a lot of appetite for posting and music in general. Maybe it is because I missed my tracks collection back home, or because in the car we had almost no music because the guy had a cassette player, not a cd-player as I thought initially….

So, after looking through some music blogs as I arrived back online, I saw that a lot of people posted about the recent top that Paste Magazine is publishing – the top 100 songwriters still alive. Here is the direct link to the list.

Some of my comments on it:

- Pink Floyd is much to low, on #80 !!

- Outkast is too low, on #99

- Notable artists not on the list are: Deep Purple, Lauryn Hill / Wyclef Jean / Fugees, Peter Frampton, Alanis Morissette, Katie Melua (maybe), Bjork and many more.

Even though the initiative is to be praised, maybe they should have dedicated more time to this. Leaving such good artists out of the list can make it highly questionable.

First Post – Cruise Me

04.Jun

Apparently Mihai is a really persuasive guy, so here i am finally writing my first post on this blog. If he got me started, i fear this might be the beginning of many posts from me from now on, so i can only hope you bear with me :).

I am absolutely sure that everybody who ends up on this blog one way or another knows things about David Bowie, and has listened to him at least once. Without being a fan, i’ve been listening to many of his songs, but yesterday i particularly fell for one of them. Since i enjoy watching movies just as much as i enjoy music in general, when i discover a movie whose soundtrack is really well chosen, and seems almost vital for the intensity of some scenes, i get really enthusiastic. That’s the case with David Lynch’s “Lost highway”. The movie begins and ends with David Bowie singing ”I’m deranged”, while the images suggest a moving car on a highway. ”I’m Deranged” is a song written by David Bowie and Brian Eno in 1995 for the album Outside. And not only does the song suit the movie perfectly, but it’s also very appropriate as a car-track, as far as i am concerned. Which i’ve experienced last night, as hopefully suggested by this pic i took.

So, that’s about it for the first time. I’m curious about what you think about the track. And, Mihai, i promise next time it will be less about movies and more about the music ;).

To review …

28.May

Throughout this entire month I kept a folder called “To review” where I decided to put all the songs I come upon during my (not so) daily hops on other music blogs – an effort for being more organized and make sure I don’t miss too much. Now the time has come to clean up the folder and see what was really valuable in there.

Except for some old tracks I knew for a long time and I gladly discovered them (some Nirvana, some RHCP and others), most of the things were crap pop-rock tracks, where a bunch of British-sound-like guys were torturing some instruments (the more, the better) and screaming at the microphone. That’s not music, it’s just some wanna-be people trying to impress a record label.

Still, I managed to find a new artist I immediatelly fell for – a jazz / piano singer called Regina Spektor. I found her thanks to I Guess I’m Floating blog, which tipically provides some nice tracks.

So, if you are curious what is the most beautiful music I discovered this month, here it is, a sample – Regina Spektor – On the Radio.

BITCHFEST

05.May

Thanx to my good friend Octi for pointing out this “bitch” to me.

(He said she reminded him of me, so I was bound to like her from the start…)

I just love her rough voice and all her covers sound excellent; they really got my blood pumping again – after a very exhausting week/month/trimester of my life :)

I hope you will enjoy the songs as much as I did. After all, the world needs as many bitches as it can get…

Bitch Fest

Hurrah Part 1. Music Festivals Part 2

30.Apr

I noticed that in Romania you have two types of hipsters. It all stems from communist censorship I think- people in their twenties want to deny a heavy burden of a past by hating the mainstream and anything that has to do with the (musical) past and can’t be retro-hip; and rockers perpetuate that fuck the system adage by hating the mainstream head-banger style. Electro music fans or rawk fans, two camps that are in no way camp. You could look at rock at being more traditional form of dissent and electro is just the opposite, so scenester definitions no.2 respectively no.1 apply. On one side you have Therion or Nightwish or whatever (when did we become fucking nordic-philes?) on the other hand you got a bunch of DJs. The Rogue Wave or Mazarin we leave to the NY hipsters while we deal with extremes.

But finally… A home grown festival all of our own. Artmania Sibiu 2006 (official site). I can’t say it would be refreshing for me to see H.I.M. live, but I know some of you out there are squealing squeals of joy. The festival’s in July. Tickets are 65 RON. That’s uh what..20 euros. For a four-band mini-fest. HIM, Amorphis, SILENTIVM, Carmen Gray. Be warned: angry black-background links those are.
And remember: it is not recommended to bring infants in prams or children under 5 years old to the festival area. Or drugs of any nature, not that you would.

The Cribs have nothing to do with the festival. But I think the scenesters song touches on the earlier subject I was contemplating.

The Cribs – Hey Scenesters! mp3 (via iHud file storage)

If you’d like to hurrah something, do it now so that all our 30 unique hits/day know about it. Being a scenester doesn’t mean you can’t share.

I come with cheer and cute voice and banjo, too much doom going on here.

One of these days people are going to run out of band names. Hop Along, Queen Ansleis is a
friendly indie gal requesting you to “bring something to shake or bang on” at her shows which is encouraging news. I linked her myspace page where you can listen to two very folky songs.

yelle

In further indie electro webcrawling we have relentlessly kitschy Yelle as one French chick singing about well what you’d expect disco divas to… ridiculous lovely raunchy lyrics.

Should anyone want mp3s let me know.

Brownie Points for Dirty Wellies*

19.Apr

The truth is I’ve never been to a music festival. But there are some facts I deem as common knowledge.
If you let your tent be your energy, then it’s always going to be too hot if there’s any bit of sunshine. You’ll be sharing your living space with red-necked English folk who can’t play guitar properly but really want to prove to anyone who won’t listen that they have fought lions bare-handed, they have supressed entire civilizations, oh yes they are Englishmen. They can bloody well play the guitar. I’m allowed to say that, I’m like half British.

If you go to the UK, chances are you’ll have one top experience music-wise but let it not get smothered by the mud. It’s going to be everywhere, so luckily you can buy a pair of rubber stockings (said wellies) to protect your feet from getting violated by the grime. The cigarettes you’ll soon put in the back of your head when you see that a pack of 18 is almost a fiver. Oh and prepare to be shocked, Brits are friendly and they talk about the weather and a variety of other subjects.

The festival I’ll be mentioning today is Electric Picnic. Just imagine..” a 600 acre estate with it’s own lake, surrounded by ancient oak and chestnut trees“. Ok it’s pamphlet-y but I already listed some cons of festivals, let’s be optimistic here. Stradbally Hall, that’s the place, one hour away from Dublin (walking? jogging? by car?). Tickets cost €175 which includes three days plus camping

Here’s two very different artists performing at Electric Picnic:

Rufus Wainwright – Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk – total download buy

DJ Shadow – 3 Freaks (feat.Keak Da Sneak & Turf Talk) – it’s a stream

Festivals of music. Peace, pints, spliffs and … Just peachy.
